Yellowstone Hot Springs: Can You Actually Soak?

No — soaking in Yellowstone’s thermal features is illegal and deadly. Every pool, geyser basin and hot creek inside the park is off-limits to bathing. As of 2026, the only designated swim area is the seasonal Firehole River spot (cold water, not a hot spring). The closest legal hot springs are outside the gates — Yellowstone Hot Springs resort sits 8 miles from the North Entrance.

The flood shifted the Gardner River’s course and the geothermal vents; the water now runs ~140°F with no cold water to mix against, and the approach terrain is unstable. At least 22 people have died in Yellowstone’s thermal features — more than from bears. The deadliest cases involved people leaving boardwalks or trying to soak in "hot potting" spots: thin crust collapses into near-boiling water, and victims have died from full-body burns. This is why the park bans soaking outright — the rules aren’t about prudishness.

Illegally soaking in thermal features — usually at night, at backcountry spots like the Firehole River confluences or geyser basins. It’s citable (fines and park bans), it’s killed people, and rangers actively patrol known spots. Snake Hot Springs and similar backcountry seeps are thermal areas, not soaks — treating them as baths is both illegal and genuinely lethal.
