About this spring
Legendary 1952 Calistoga spa resort that put volcanic-ash mud baths on the map — three geothermal mineral pools (indoor and outdoor) at 85°F, 95°F and 104°F fed by Calistoga's natural hot springs. Fee: Pools for overnight guests; spa packages available.
Dr. Wilkinson's opened in 1952, when chiropractor John 'Doc' Wilkinson and his wife Edy began pairing Calistoga's geothermal mineral waters with his own volcanic-ash mud-bath recipe — the treatment that would make the resort's name. The Wilkinsons ran the business into the late 1970s before passing it to their children; when the family sold in 2019, it stood as Calistoga's longest continuously family-run spa resort, anchored by a blazing neon sign on Lincoln Avenue.
New owners Chartres Lodging spent nearly two years reworking the property into Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs: the neon sign was grandfathered in (the town allows no new neon), a lookalike 1952 Buick was found and parked where Doc kept his own, and Edy's old art studio became a guest cottage. A private geothermal spring feeds three mineral pools at graduated temperatures — including a 105°F indoor pool dating to the 1970s — plus spa tubs and steam rooms, while the House of Better restaurant anchors a central greenspace created from the old driveway.
