- ~70-yard walk from bridge parking to source pool then down to river pools — easy to miss at the foot of the bridge

- Hazard: Variable pool condition — may be unusable on arrival
About this spring
Small primitive hot spring in Boise National Forest at the foot of Sheep Creek Bridge on the Middle Fork Boise River — shallow rock-walled pools (~98°F) with dirt bottoms below the bridge. Source ~142°F — soak only where cooled. Source 142°F dangerous — soak only in cooled pools. Road rough and seasonal.
Sheep Creek Bridge Hot Spring is the westernmost of the free primitive soaks along the Middle Fork Boise River Road (FS 268) in Boise National Forest, hidden behind a small rise at the foot of the Sheep Creek bridge. The USGS measured the source at 141.8°F in May 1981 — strongly alkaline water (pH 9.5) that is sodium-rich and notably free of magnesium — so the scalding, algae-laden source pool is for looking, not soaking.
Bathing happens in small, shallow rock-walled and tarp-dammed pools built just below the source, which hold around 98°F with dirt and rock bottoms and carry light to moderate algae. The spring anchors a corridor of thermal sites along the rough Middle Fork road toward Atlanta, with Twin Springs, Smith Cabin, Loftus, Vaughn and Ninemeyer upstream. Usage is light to moderate, and the lower pool offers a clear view over the river and the road.
Directions & trailhead access
From Boise: Hwy 21 past Lucky Peak, E Spring Shores Rd/Middle Fork Boise River Rd (FS 268) to Sheep Creek Bridge; spring at the bridge foot, hidden by a small hill.
Idaho geothermal context
Idaho's thermal water rides the old track of the Yellowstone hotspot across the Snake River Plain and surfaces along faults in the surrounding mountains. Many of the best soaks are roadside or river-access pools inside national forests — including springs that only emerge when river levels drop. Backcountry sites demand real navigation skills and long dirt-road drives.
What a primitive site means here
Primitive springs have no facilities: no changing rooms, no trash service, often no maintained road to the pool. Expect natural rock or gravel bottoms, water temperature that varies by spot and season, and other visitors who may treat the site informally. Pack out everything you bring, test the water before entering, and leave the pool cleaner than you found it.
Best time to visit
Year-Round (Best: May – October)Pool temperatures and access can change with weather and season. Outdoor ambient temperatures fluctuate significantly across Idaho. Late spring through autumn offers the most comfortable road access.
