Bozeman Hot Springs has operated commercially since 1879, when wagon and carriage maker Jeremiah Mathews bought the springs and built a bathhouse with five private bathing rooms and a 14-by-18-foot plunge. E. Myron Ferris paid $25,000 for it in 1890, renamed it Ferris Hot Springs, and added a two-story hotel, lawn tennis and croquet, ferrying guests from town in a horse-drawn 'herdic'; he promoted it as 'The Great Pleasure and Health Resort of America,' claiming the water chemically resembled Carlsbad's. Unable to find a single buyer after World War I, Ferris famously raffled the resort off in parcels at $100 a chance — 700 tickets sold, and a Bozeman restaurant worker drew the grand prize of the hotel, springs and ten acres. In the early 1920s Sam Collett added a maple-floored ballroom beside the pools that hosted weekend dances through the 1930s. Today's facility runs 12 pools from 59 to 106°F; the indoor pools use untreated geothermal water drained and cleaned nightly, while the three main outdoor pools are chlorinated. The facility closes Friday sundown to Saturday sundown in observance of the owners' Seventh-day Adventist faith.
