About this spring
One of the most remote and hardest-to-reach hot springs in Washington — a small soaking pool at ~6,500 ft near Gamma Peak in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Source ~140°F (too hot directly); soaking only in the tiny creek-mixed pool. Typically a multi-day backpacking trip ending in an off-trail descent. Expert-level: off-trail descent steep and can be snow-covered; multi-day self-sufficiency required. Verify Suiattle River Rd status.
Gamma Hot Springs is widely described as the hardest hot spring to reach in Washington and the hottest documented spring in the North Cascades, with a source around 140°F — far too hot for direct immersion. Soaking happens only in a tiny natural pool, roughly 6 by 8 feet and holding about four people, where the spring flow mixes with cold Gamma Creek; visitors regulate the temperature by diverting creek water into the pool. A black plastic tube near the spring reputedly holds an informal visitor log left by past travelers.
The approach starts at the Suiattle River Trailhead at the end of Forest Road 26, about 23 miles from Darrington, and runs roughly 12-13 miles one way via the Suiattle River Trail (784), a short stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Gamma Ridge Trail (786). No trail reaches the spring itself — the final descent into the Gamma Creek headwaters is a steep, brushy, sometimes snow-covered off-trail route demanding genuine navigation skill. Most parties need at least two nights, and Suiattle River Road has a long history of washouts that can add miles to the trip.

What a primitive site means here
Primitive springs have no facilities: no changing rooms, no trash service, often no maintained road to the pool. Expect natural rock or gravel bottoms, water temperature that varies by spot and season, and other visitors who may treat the site informally. Pack out everything you bring, test the water before entering, and leave the pool cleaner than you found it.
