About this spring
Revived 20-room high-desert hot springs hotel an hour east of San Diego on Old Hwy 80, once a hideaway for Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich — reopened 2023-24 with three mineral pools (Ritual, Solstice, Echo Room), a restored bathhouse music venue and spring-fed Jacumba Lake. Public pool passes ~$20-50; pools are adults 21+.
The Kumeyaay were drawn to Jacumba's warm spring — about 104°F — long before the prolific artesian flow filled public baths grand enough to anchor a resort town at 3,200 feet in San Diego County's high desert. The San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway connected Jacumba to San Diego in 1919, and by 1925 the town had the world-class Hotel Jacumba; through the 1930s it was a prime relaxation destination for movie stars and celebrities. Decline set in after Interstate 8 bypassed Old Highway 80 by two miles; the hotel was destroyed in a 1983 arson fire — its massive fireplace stub still stands — and the great baths closed, the pool filled in, the well capped.
The revived Jacumba Hot Springs Hotel returned the waters to use with three chemically untreated mineral pools: the Ritual Pool (88-93°F) anchors the social scene and accepts day-pass holders, the Solstice Pool offers a quieter soak, and the Echo Room is a 102°F indoor pool open 24 hours to hotel guests — all restricted to adults 21+. The alkaline water (pH 10+) is registered as therapeutic by the Balneology Association of North America, and a spring-fed mineral lake sits on the grounds.
