About this spring

Broadwater Hot Springs & Fitness occupies the site of the grandest resort failure in Montana history: Colonel Charles A. Broadwater's Hotel Broadwater and Natatorium, built in 1888–89 for $500,000 on forty landscaped acres along Ten Mile Creek west of Helena. The Moorish-style natatorium housed what was billed as the world's largest indoor pool — some 30,000 square feet — fed by more than a million gallons a day of hot and cold spring water piped a mile and a half from the source, with granite-boulder waterfalls, toboggan slides, stained glass and electric trolley service to town. Aimed at elite rail travelers bound for Yellowstone and Glacier, it never turned a profit; Broadwater died in 1892, the 1935 earthquakes wrecked the natatorium (razed in 1946), and the hotel closed in 1941 and was demolished after a 1974 auction. The springs kept flowing: the Broadwater Athletic Club opened on the site in October 1979, and a 2015 rebranding produced today's facility, whose seven pools range from cold plunges to 105°F hot tubs.
