About this spring

The springs beneath downtown White Sulphur Springs were known to Native peoples as the 'Wampum Waters' — Flathead, Blackfeet and Crow treated this valley as neutral ground, a 'Valley of Peace' where even warring tribes shared the water under truce. Settler James Brewer learned of the springs around 1866 and by 1872 had built a bathhouse with three single bath rooms and a 12-by-12-foot plunge, charging 75 cents a bath ('whiskey extra') at a settlement he named Brewer's Springs. Dr. William Parberry bought the property in 1876 and gave the town its current name.
Around 1900, circus magnate John Ringling bought the springs and planned an elaborate bathhouse and hotel — plans the Depression scuttled — after a German chemist reported the water 'possessed such high virtue' that better springs were doubtful in the Western Hemisphere. A published analysis shows a bicarbonate-sodium water (830 and 504 ppm). The motel's three untreated mineral pools are still drained and refilled nightly.
