About this spring

Commercial hot springs resort and budget lodging on the Rio Grande in downtown Truth or Consequences — a 1940s building converted to soaking pools in 1990. Multiple outdoor pools (~95-108°F) with Turtleback Mountain views; ADA lift on the large Sierra pool. Fee: ~$30-40/hr common pools; private pools ~$40-50. Minimum soaking age 12. Riverbend Hot Springs occupies the only commercial property on the Rio Grande in downtown Truth or Consequences, and its pools grew directly out of a bait shop. Nona and Luta Pierce built the riverside structure as Pierce's Minnows in 1946, selling bait to Rio Grande and reservoir fishermen for decades. Lee and Sylvia Foerstner bought the property in 1988; after Lee drilled a 40-foot well and hit 109-degree mineral water, they cleaned out the minnow tanks and pumped the hot springs in by fire hose — creating the 'Hot Minnow Baths,' whose three hottest pools still occupy the original bait tanks.

The Foerstners opened in 1990 as what they billed as the world's only youth hostel with riverside hot springs baths, landing on the back cover of Let's Go USA and drawing international backpackers. After 2001 the funky hostel evolved into today's resort, which marked 30 years in business in January 2020.
