About this spring
Historic mineral springs resort in the Columbia River Gorge ~1 hr from Portland (former Moffett's Hot Springs, 1881) — closed to the public in 2016 and REOPENED Feb 2025 after a $4M renovation. Indoor mineral pool, outdoor hot tub, sauna, full spa, restaurant and restored forest trails. A separate property from Carson Hot Springs 11 mi east. The springs at North Bonneville were a gathering place for Indigenous peoples long before commercial development, with Native use of the mineral water cited as far back as 10,000 years. The site was developed in the 1880s as Moffett's Hot Springs, anchored by the Cascade Hotel built in 1881; after that building burned in the 1930s, the property was reborn in 1932 as Bilba Hot Springs with a dozen cabins and a 38-acre campground, then slowly declined through the 1970s. Pete Cam, who credited the water with relieving his rheumatoid arthritis, acquired the property by 1989, renamed it Bonneville Hot Springs, and built the modern resort.
The geothermal source emerges at about 109°F with an alkaline pH of 8.2 and a chloride-sulfate-carbonate mineral profile that lacks the typical sulfur smell — the water is described as pure enough to drink. After closing to the public around 2016-2017 for use as a rehabilitation facility, the property was sold to Fusion Lodging in October 2024 and reopened in early 2025 with an indoor mineral pool, outdoor hot tub, cold plunges, sauna, spa, and limited day-use passes. A trail from the property connects directly to the Dick Thomas Trail toward Aldrich Butte and Table Mountain.
