About this spring
Uncrowded geothermal pools on the north edge of Almo near City of Rocks — a climbers' favorite with 2 hot tubs, a kiddie pool and a summer swimming pool; no chemicals, weekly drain/refill. Durfee is among Idaho's oldest family-run hot springs. Henry Miller and Rosa Durfee developed it in the early 1900s around springs that bubbled up in the meadow east of their rock house in Almo; their first 1920s pool was a sandy-bottomed basin enclosed by cement walls, later gaining dressing rooms and a high board fence. Their son Edwin and wife Nettie ran it into the 1950s before it closed to the public in the early 1960s and sat unused for decades. Descendants Jackie Durfee Henson and her husband Larry rebuilt and reopened it in 2005. Today a roughly 115°F source feeds four chemical-free, continuously flowing pools: a 50-by-50-foot swimming pool, a 10-by-20-foot kiddie pool about two feet deep, and two roughly 15-by-30-foot soaking pools near 104°F, one partially covered for shade. At about 5,400 feet in Cassia County, it is the established soaking stop for climbers and hikers visiting City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park.
