Lava Hot Springs is a genuine geothermal system, not just a resort: mineral water emerges from Paleozoic quartzite and travertine vents at about 113°F with a combined flow of roughly 34 gallons per second, and the pools run 102-112°F. The water is notably free of sulfur odor and carries manganese, sodium, iron, calcium bicarbonate, potassium, magnesium, zinc and fluoride; over 2.5 million gallons a day pass through the pools and are diverted into the Portneuf River.
The Bannock and Shoshone peoples used the springs for generations — the site is remembered as neutral ground — and the land was part of the original Fort Hall reservation before a treaty-era federal purchase and a 1902 act granted the roughly 178-acre parcel to the State of Idaho for public use. Management now rests with the Lava Hot Springs Foundation, an agency of the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. Severe floods in 1962-63 destroyed the earlier pools, which were rebuilt; enrolled Shoshone-Bannock and Northwest Band of Shoshone members enter free with tribal ID.
