About this spring
Rock-walled, silt-bottomed soaking pools (~98-114°F) along the north bank of Salt Creek in Willamette National Forest — site of a resort that operated 1914-1958; volunteers rebuild pools after floods. Traditionally clothing-optional and busy on weekends given highway proximity; USFS day-use only. Fee: $5/vehicle day-use. Pools submerged or too cool during high water (May-June runoff). Day-use only. No trash service.
McCredie Hot Springs is a roadside soak on Salt Creek in the Willamette National Forest, about 50 miles east of Eugene off Highway 58. The springs emerge from a rocky streambank across the creek from a parking pullout, with source temperatures around 130°F. A series of shallow, rock-lined pools occupies the creek bank — some in the creek itself, some on the gravel flat above — with water ranging from warm to cool depending on how much cold Salt Creek water mixes in. Volunteers maintain the pools informally, and the Forest Service manages the site as a day-use area with a small parking fee and primitive toilets. The springs are most reliable from May through October; high water can submerge the pools, and snow closes the access road most winters. Clothing is optional, and the site can be crowded on summer weekends.
Directions & trailhead access
From Oakridge ~8-10 miles east on OR-58 to the signed McCredie day-use parking between mileposts 46-47; short trail to the pools. ~50 miles southeast of Eugene.
Oregon geothermal context
Oregon splits cleanly in two: Cascade volcanic springs like the Umpqua corridor pools west of the crest, and high-desert basin springs like the Alvord area east of it. Western sites sit in dense wet forest prone to fire closures and winter road washouts; eastern ones are remote sagebrush tubs under enormous skies. Both ends reward checking land-manager alerts before driving out.
What a primitive site means here
Primitive springs have no facilities: no changing rooms, no trash service, often no maintained road to the pool. Expect natural rock or gravel bottoms, water temperature that varies by spot and season, and other visitors who may treat the site informally. Pack out everything you bring, test the water before entering, and leave the pool cleaner than you found it.
Best time to visit
May – October (Spring through Fall)Pacific Northwest springs are framed by lush temperate rainforests. Summer brings dry, sunny trail conditions, while autumn provides vibrant foliage and crisp soaking weather.
