About this spring

A series of travertine soaking pools and a covered tub perched on a bare rock face ~150 ft above the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River in Umpqua National Forest, with views of Surprise Falls. Managed by the US Forest Service as day-use only; nudity is common and expected. Spring temps 100-115°F. Fee: $5/vehicle/day (Northwest Forest Pass accepted). Day-use only. FR 3401 typically closes in winter (Nov-Apr) adding ~2.5 mi each way. Parking area has a history of vehicle break-ins. Steep slick footing.

Umpqua Hot Springs is a chain of geothermal pools perched on a travertine terrace above the North Umpqua River in the Umpqua National Forest, about 60 miles east of Roseburg. The spring surfaces at roughly 108°F and cascades through a series of shallow, mineral-crusted pools — five to seven of them — terraced down the hillside, each progressively cooler and offering a different soak temperature. The pools overlook the river canyon from a forested bench about 150 feet above the water, reached by a steep half-mile trail from a Forest Service trailhead off Forest Road 3401. A day-use fee applies; the Forest Service manages the site and maintains composting toilets at the trailhead. The springs are clothing-optional and attract a steady stream of visitors, especially in summer and early fall. The access road can be impassable in winter due to snow and washouts.

The Umpqua Hot Springs are a group of geothermal springs located along the North Umpqua River in the U.S. state of Oregon at 2,640 feet (800 m) elevation. The hot mineral water emerges from several sources to form a series of cascading pools. Eight pools are available for soaking, the larger having a solid rock bottom and the smaller pools have coarse sand bottoms. The larger is five by eight feet and 110 °F (43 °C), and is covered by a wooden enclosure. The upper pool is smaller but slightly warmer, measuring four by five feet and 112 °F (44 °C). Both pools are approximately two and a half feet deep. Umpqua is clothing optional. The hot springs are for day use only. The nearest camping is at Toketee Lake.

Oregon geothermal context

Oregon splits cleanly in two: Cascade volcanic springs like the Umpqua corridor pools west of the crest, and high-desert basin springs like the Alvord area east of it. Western sites sit in dense wet forest prone to fire closures and winter road washouts; eastern ones are remote sagebrush tubs under enormous skies. Both ends reward checking land-manager alerts before driving out.

What a primitive site means here

Primitive springs have no facilities: no changing rooms, no trash service, often no maintained road to the pool. Expect natural rock or gravel bottoms, water temperature that varies by spot and season, and other visitors who may treat the site informally. Pack out everything you bring, test the water before entering, and leave the pool cleaner than you found it.

Best time to visit
