Start — ~45 min east of Eugene on OR-58, roadside pullout on Salt Creek
The closest wild soak to Eugene: riverside pools literally off the highway, $5/vehicle, sunrise–sunset, clothing-optional. Honest warning: the north bank has repeated visitor reports of harassment — groups fare better; the south bank pools below are the calmer call.
2. McCredie Hot Springs — South BankOpen
Same spot — cross to the far side of Salt Creek via FR 5875 + ~0.4-mi trail
The quieter side of the same $5 day-use area: pools across the creek reached by a short trail and an unbridged crossing. Slippery banks; skip it after heavy rain when the ford gets pushy.
3. Wall Creek Warm Springs (Meditation Pool)Closed
~15 mi south of Oakridge — but the trailhead is CLOSED
The Meditation Pool — a ~95–106°F oval tub in old-growth forest — survived the Cedar Creek Fire, but the Warm Springs Trailhead sits inside an active fire-area closure through Dec 31, 2026. Entry is prohibited; check the order before penciling this one in.
4. Terwilliger (Cougar) Hot SpringsOpen
~35 mi north — OR-58 → McKenzie Hwy 126 to Rider Creek trailhead
Cougar Hot Springs: the famous tiered pools in a forested ravine, now a managed fee site — $12/person per 2 hours, wristbands, hosts on-site, closed Thursday 8am–noon for cleaning. Clothing-optional; expect company. Post-fire hazards (loose rock, debris flows) are real on the trail in.
5. Belknap Hot SpringsOpen
~10 min north on Hwy 126 — roadside resort on the McKenzie River
The comfortable option: a riverside resort where day visitors get the lower pool for $12/hour (9am–5pm sign-in, closed federal holidays). Overnight guests get both pools to 9pm. Swimwear required — the counterpoint to Cougar’s scene.
6. Bigelow Hot Spring (Deer Creek)Open
~10 min east on Hwy 126, then FR 2654 to the McKenzie north bank
Deer Creek Hot Spring: a free rock-walled pool in a fern grotto right on the river — ~102–104°F in summer and fall, but high water drowns it cold. Day use only, sunrise to sunset; 2–4 people fits it comfortably.
7. Lower Breitenbush Hot SpringsOpen
North spur — ~50 mi via OR-22 to Detroit, then forest roads into the burn area
Free and unofficial: concrete tubs left from the ruined Skiff’s Camp resort, reached by an unmarked ~0.5-mi path through the 2020 wildfire scar plus a river ford. Watch for standing dead trees (snags) on the approach — fall hazard, especially in wind.
8. Breitenbush Hot Springs RetreatReservation/permission
Same spur — the retreat center just up the road
The worker-owned off-grid retreat, rebuilt after the 2020 fire: day use 9am–6pm at $40–50, advance reservation only — weekend passes sell out weeks ahead. Clothing-optional soaking areas, pools to ~109°F, and a genuinely unique place. Smoke season can trigger AQI-based closures.
9. Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Springs ResortOpen
Far north spur — ~90 min via OR-26 onto the Warm Springs Reservation
Reopened July 2024 after six years closed and a $13.1M renovation: a tribal-owned resort with seven 92–104°F soaking and lazy-river pools, day passes ~$29–43 (cheaper online). The easiest, most developed soak on the route — a good reward after the primitive days.
10. Umpqua Hot SpringsOpen
South spur — ~90 min south of Eugene via Hwy 138 toward Roseburg
The postcard pools: terraced tubs on a cliff face above the North Umpqua River. Day use only (sunrise–sunset), $5/vehicle via Recreation.gov — cash no longer accepted. Winter road closures apply (lifted March 20, 2026 this year). Expect crowds and nudity; periodic bacteria advisories are part of its history.
11. Paulina Lake Hot SpringsOpen
East extension — ~1.5 mi shoreline walk on Paulina Lake, Newberry Caldera near Bend
The volcanic oddity: thermal water seeps through the beach gravel of a crater lake — soak in EXISTING pools only (USFS prohibits digging new ones; hot vents under the sand reach ~115°F+). Seasonal — the caldera road is closed in winter. A different kind of soak to end the trip.

This is a hub-and-spokes region, not a straight line: base in Eugene (or Oakridge) and run OR-58 (McCredie) → OR-126 up the McKenzie (Terwilliger, Belknap, Bigelow) → OR-22 to Detroit for the Breitenbush pair. Umpqua is a separate ~90-min south spur on Hwy 138; Paulina is a Bend-side extension; Kah-Nee-Ta is the far north detour. All paved except the Breitenbush forest roads and short spring approaches.
Reservations & fees
Breitenbush is reservation-only and sells out weeks ahead on weekends. Terwilliger uses on-site wristband entry ($12/2hr). Umpqua and McCredie take Recreation.gov/fee-box ($5/vehicle — Umpqua no longer takes cash). Belknap day use is walk-in $12/hr. Kah-Nee-Ta sells online day passes cheaper than gate price.
Honest cautions
Two famous stops are legally closed right now — Bagby (fire closure through 2026) and the Wall Creek trailhead (same fire scar). The north-bank McCredie pool has repeated harassment reports — visit in a group or use the south bank. Riverside pools (Bigelow, Sunbeam-style sites) drown cold in high water, and the 2020/2022 burn areas mean dead snags on several approaches.
