The El Morocco Inn occupies a late-1950s motor lodge built directly over a vein of mineral-rich thermal water, and began life as the Caravan Spa-tel — one of the many spa-hotels that thrived when Desert Hot Springs billed itself as 'California's Spa City.' Like most of those resorts, the Caravan eventually succumbed to the high cost of maintaining hot mineral wells, until Bruce Abney bought the property in 2001 and recast it as a 13-room Moroccan fantasy inspired by Las Vegas's old El Morocco Hotel and his own travels: handwoven textiles, goatskin-wrapped lamps, a tented Spa Garden, and Casablanca looping in the library nook.
The inn's private well feeds a large covered Jacuzzi-style spa and a warm mineral-water pool, both open 24 hours to overnight guests, with daytime pool access bundled with spa bookings. Unusually for a vintage desert spa, the property was renovated for full wheelchair access, including a lift-equipped mineral pool and a roll-in-shower guest room.
